Boston Common and Beacon Hill
The Boston TV & Movie Sites Tour starts off in Boston Common, a 50-acre central park in the city, that has set the stage for many TV shows and films. Nicknamed the Movie Mile, Beacon Hill is the most filmed section of Boston. The movie mile has set the scene for The Departed, Ted, Good Will Hunting, Boondock Saints and much more.
Resting along the outskirts of Boston Common is one of Boston's most recognizable film locations: the real Cheers bar. Cheers Beacon Hill, also known as the Bull & Finch Pub, served as the exterior for the bar seen in NBC's Cheers. Enjoy a stop at this highly recognizable site.
To get a closer look at the filming locations in Boston Common and Beacon Hill join us on the Boston Movie Mile Walking Tour.
Famous baseball stadium, Fenway Park, is home to Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox and the location for many fan-favorite films like Ted, Fever Pitch, Field of Dreams, Money Ball, R.I.P.D and The Town were filmed as the tour takes you around Fenway Park.
Filmmakers love Copley because it captures the Boston skyline in a historic setting. Well-known attractions in this area include the John Hancock Tower, Trinity Church, Copley Square and Copley Plaza Hotel. These locations have been used in filming for Disney's Suite Life of Zach and Cody, The Box, My Best Friend's Girl, Fever Pitch, The Women and Blown Away.
Known by the locals as "Southie", South Boston is the largest Irish neighborhood in the city. The Saint Patrick's Day Parade, which begins in South Boston, is the second biggest parade in the world. It's no wonder professionals in the entertainment industry often choose locations in South Boston when film scouting for Irish-American movies. Movies filmed in this area include The Town, Southie, The Verdict, Mystic River, The Departed and Gone Baby Gone. One of the most popular Southie filming locations is the L Street Tavern, which was used as Matt Damon's and Ben Affleck's hometown pub in Good Will Hunting.
The Boston TV & Movie Sites Tour will also take you to the South Boston Waterfront, formerly known as the Seaport District, which is home to the Boston Convention Center seen in the movie 21. Other films shot in this neighborhood include The Departed, The Game Plan and Next Stop Wonderland. Jack Nicholson's ruthless mobster role in The Departed was modeled after real-life mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, who was arraigned at the Moakley Courthouse located in the South Boston Waterfront.
North End / West End
North End is best known as Boston's Little Italy. Historical landmarks in the neighborhood include Copp's Hill Burying Ground (one of the oldest cemeteries in the country), the Paul Revere House and The Skinny House (Boston's narrowest house). In the movie world, Jimmy Fallon's character in Fever Pitch resided in North End. Other movies filmed in North End include National Treasure, The Departed andThe Town.
The West End of Boston borders the Charles River and is home to the Bank North Garden where the Boston Celtics and Bruins play. The police headquarters used in The Departed was filmed in West End. In reality, the building is a State mental health facility.
While The Town brought the rough edges of Charlestown to the big screen, the neighbhorhood is much more than bank robberies and gangsters. Located at the northern end of the Freedom Trail, Charlestown and its beautiful brownstones is home to over 15,000 residents, many of whom are Irish Americans. The area has a rich history including the Bunker Hill Monument, Charlestown Navy Yard and St. Mary's. Charlestown also marks the location where Paul Revere started his famous "midnight ride."
