BIRDMAN FILMING LOCATIONS IN NYC
Birdman tells the story of a has-been actor famous for playing an iconic superhero, and his attempt to revive his career by mounting a Broadway play. Michael Keaton, coincidentally considered one of the best reincarnations of Batman, stars. Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, and Zach Galifanakis round out the cast.
Birdman was shot largely at the St. James Theater (246 W 44th St), in its dressing rooms, lobby, orchestra seats, and on the stage itself. The theater’s exterior is showcased as well – Keaton was photographed hanging from a crane outside of the St. James, with multiple Broadway marquees and the iconic Theatre District restaurant Sardis in the background. The Birdman trailer also features Keaton running through Times Square in his underwear, and a battle scene unfolding on 43rd St. The block was shut down outside Holy Cross School (332 W 43rd St) to film multiple stunts: shoot-outs, an explosion, and Keaton jumping from a roof. Residents were advised in advance not to worry about the smoke billowing from the set!
Birdman is one of the most anticipated films this fall because of its Academy Award-nominated director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Babel, Biutiful) and Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Gravity). The movie was shot to give the illusion that it was filmed in a single take. The groundbreaking cinematography, paired with a stacked cast, is sure to make the film a critical hit. Birdman opens October 17, 2014.
