30 ROCK FILMING LOCATIONS

30 Rock is an Emmy Award-winning American sitcom on NBC, created by former Saturday Night Live (SNL) performer and head writer Tina Fey, who stars in the show and has written numerous episodes, including the pilot. The show’s title comes from a nickname for 30 Rockefeller Plaza (also known as the GE Building), home to NBC’s New York City studios. 30 Rock follows the cast and crew of a fictional SNL-like sketch comedy called TGS with Tracy Jordan, who is played by Tracy Morgan. Fey portrays Liz Lemon, the head writer of TGS, and Alec Baldwin plays her boss Jack Donaghy, who constantly tries to interfere with Lemon’s show.

On Location Tours’ NYC TV & Movie Tour takes you to the locations where 30 Rock is filmed, including, of course, 30 Rock.  This GE Building’s Art Deco skyscraper forms the centerpiece of the Rockefeller Center in Midtown and is most famously known as the headquarters of the television network NBC. It is also one of the most recognized skyscrapers in New York, where Charles C. Ebbet’s iconic photograph Lunch atop a Skyscraper was taken hundreds of feet above New York City’s street. Take a trip to the top floor to see the remarkable Rainbow Room, where elite and influential New Yorkers gather for outstanding cocktails and food in one of the most prominent restaurant and nightclub in Manhattan. The Rainbow Room’s beautiful architecture, revolving dance floor, big band orchestra, and magnificent view of New York is absolutely perfect for the hundreds of special events they cater.

Head to the famous Rockefeller Plaza, located between 5th and 7th Avenues and between 48th and 51st street, and the outdoor filming location of the award-winning 30 Rock and also The Today Show.  This Historic National Landmark consists of 19 buildings, and brings in thousands of tourists, especially during the Christmas season for the Center’s beautiful festive decorations and magnificent tree.  Each year, the perfect tree is scouted for from a helicopter; once the perfect tree is found, it makes its way to Rockefeller Center. This well-known Christmas tree remains lit until the week after New Year’s Day and is recycled through Habitat for Humanity.

Located underneath Rockefeller Center is New York’s largest underground city. The underground Concourse features retail shops, fast food, fine dining, and an ice rink. During the bitter cold months, this underground area is the perfect answer to navigate between the Rockefeller buildings while keeping warm.
